GALWAY CLASSIC WEEKEND 2023
Galway Classic Race
April 15th
Ride The Classic Sportif
April 16th
Ride The Classic is a unique leisure cycling sportive, taking you through the beautiful country lanes and bogs of East Galway. A combination of off-road sectors on bog roads, farm tracks, boreens, and manor estates, make up about 25% of the route.
The sister event to the Galway Classic, Irelands only 'classics' style road race, Ride The Classic gives riders a true taste of the traditional gritty old northern european professional road races, an experience and memorable challenge like none other.

THE OPTIONS

THE SECTORS
START
RYEHILL DEMESNE
@ 0km
The belltower rings as you leave the start line on a dusty track as it winds its way through the old stable courtyard, out onto a gritty 300m stretch that brings you out through the old estate gates - you're off!

SECTOR 2
CLOVERPARK
@ 64km
The toughest sector on the course due to its undulations. Upon entering this sector you will descend on a compact gravel service road before climbing out of Cloverpark on a gritty dusty farm track. With its undulations and broken surface this 1.8km sector is physically challenging.

SECTOR 4
MOYNE PARK
@ 82km
A visually stunning sector 2.4km long through the manor estate on a mixture of gravel and farm tracks, through the courtyard of the old manor house. This marks the start of a very challenging 3-sector leg. A truly spectacular sector.

SECTOR 6
WIND FARM
@ 95km
The third of 3 tough sectors in quick succession, this rough 1.3km path through Clonina bog twists and turns with very uneven surfaces and broken verges. It eventually winds its way onto a narrow country lane with bogs left and right - enjoy the views but watch out for the potholes!

SECTOR 8
SANCTUARY
@ 132km
This 1.6km boreen passes the duck sanctuary built by Athenry locals. A pretty country lane, not the most difficult of sectors.

SECTOR 10
RYEHILL DEMESNE
@ 152km
Concentration is needed as you ride the lose gravel entrance once more to Ryehill Domesne and onto the finish line...well done you've made it! Head to the BBQ area for some well earned food and drink!

SECTOR 1
RYEHILL DEMESNE
@ 47km
Returning past the start area you take on the first 1.4km sector at Ryehill Domense. A straight 500m tree-lined gravel road entrance brings you past the start line and past the stable courtyard once more. Its short but with a mix of surfaces this one needs concentration.

SECTOR 3
CARREFOUR
@ 75km
This 2.2km sector thru Abbey bog is a real test of will. With the prevailing tailwind and relatively straight route through, you can really attack this one! The centre is rough while the edges offer a faster line, but watch out for the soft bog verges!

SECTOR 5
ARENBERG
@ 89km
Named after the famous Arenberg forest of Paris Roubaix, this 2.0km stretch is roughest sector on the course. Now is the time to greeth your teeth - welcome to hell!

SECTOR 7
STONEHALL
@ 117km
Having had a little time to recover its time to greeth your teeth - at 3.2km this bog road is the longest sector and is sure to test tired legs. The entrance is rough but leads to compact gravel and grit roads with lots of twists and turns through the beautful Killaclogher bog in east Galway.

SECTOR 9
FINAL FLING
@ 135km
Passing through the outskirts of the walled town of Athenry, this is the last sector of the Galway Classic road race. A short 1km burst past the old Sligo rail line over Ballydavid hill.
